What is an ether.fi Tag?
Your Tag is your name on ether.fi. When someone pays your Tag, the money goes to your ether.fi account.
It's free to claim.
You can claim a Tag only once, and it can't be changed afterwards.
People who find you can see your Tag and display name, if you've added one. They cannot see your email or wallet address.
You need your own Tag before you can pay someone using theirs.
How do I claim my Tag?
Sign in to the ether.fi web app - https://www.ether.fi/app/cash/sign-in
Go to Settings, then Account details - https://www.ether.fi/app/cash/settings
Under Your Tag, select Set Up Tag.
Enter your preferred name. You don't need to type @, as it's added automatically. The system checks availability as you type.
Check the spelling and capital letters carefully. You can claim a Tag only once, and it cannot be changed later.
When you see "@yourname is available", select Claim @yourname.
You'll see "@yourname is yours" once your Tag is successfully claimed.
Your Tag is ready to use immediately and appears under Your Tag in Account details.
You can also start from the Claim your Tag tile on your home screen or from Send when attempting to pay someone by Tag.
Can I change my Tag after claiming it?
No. Each account can claim only one Tag, and it cannot be changed or deleted afterwards, including changes to capital letters.
If you try to claim another Tag, you'll see "This account already has a Tag."
Which characters can my Tag use?
Rule | Details |
Characters | Letters and numbers only. No spaces, dots, underscores, or symbols. |
Maximum length | 16 characters |
Minimum length | Depends on your membership level. |
Capital letters | Your Tag keeps the capital letters you choose, such as @SimoneF, but searches are not case-sensitive. |
Why does my membership level affect my Tag length?
Shorter Tags are a membership benefit.
Membership level | Minimum characters | Example |
VIP | 3 | @ana |
Pinnacle | 4 | @luca |
Luxe | 5 | @sofia |
Core | 6 | @daniel |
If your chosen Tag is shorter than your membership level allows, you'll see "Want a shorter Tag? Upgrade to…" with the required membership level.
Since Tags cannot be changed after claiming them, consider upgrading your membership before claiming a shorter Tag.
If your membership level changes later, you keep your existing Tag.
Why can't I claim the Tag I want?
What you see | What to do |
@name is taken. Try one of these: | Someone already has the Tag. Choose a suggestion or try another name. |
That Tag isn't allowed. Try something else. | Some names are reserved to protect brands and prevent impersonation. Try another name. |
Use at least … characters. | Your Tag is shorter than your membership level allows. Add characters or upgrade. |
Use letters and numbers only. | Remove spaces and symbols. |
Too many attempts. Wait a minute, then try again. | Wait a minute before checking more names. |
This account already has a Tag. | You've already claimed your Tag. Each account can have only one. |
How do I pay someone using their Tag?
You must claim your own Tag before paying someone using theirs.
If you haven't claimed one, you'll see Choose your Tag first. Select Choose My Tag, claim your Tag, and return to your payment.
Select Send.
In the search box, enter @ followed by the recipient's full Tag, such as @zucher.
Under Tag match, verify their display name and Tag.
Select Save @zucher as a recipient to save them for future payments, or select their name for a one-time payment.
Choose the asset and enter the amount.
On Confirm Send, verify the recipient and select Send.
The payment will appear in your Transaction history as "Sent via Tag".
How do I save someone as a recipient using their Tag?
After entering someone's full Tag in Send, select Save @name as a recipient under Tag match.
For example, after entering @simone, select Save @simone as a recipient.
Once saved:
You can type @ followed by the first few letters of their Tag to find them in your recipients.
You won't see the warning "@name isn't in your recipients. Make sure it's them."
You can still pay them if they later turn off Tag discoverability.
To remove someone, open their menu in your recipients and select "Remove from Recipients."
Why can't I find someone by their Tag?
Search only finds someone when you enter their exact, full Tag. As you type, suggestions only show people you've already saved as recipients.
What you see | What it means |
No one found with @name | Check the spelling or ask the person to confirm their Tag. They may have disabled Tag discoverability or not completed verification. |
You can't send to this ether.fi tag | The Tag cannot receive payments right now. Ask the recipient for another payment method. |
Too many lookups | Wait a minute before searching again. |
Choose your Tag first | You need your own Tag before paying by Tag. Select Choose My Tag. |
How do I share my Tag so others can pay me?
Go to Settings -https://www.ether.fi/app/cash/settings, then Account details.
Under Your Tag, select Copy.
Share your Tag with the person sending you money.
Incoming Tag payments appear in your Transaction history as "Received via Tag".
Who can find me using my Tag?
Anyone who enters your exact Tag can find you if Let people find me by Tag is enabled and your account is verified.
This setting is enabled by default when you claim your Tag. There is no public directory of Tags.
To change your visibility:
Setting | Someone searching your full Tag | Someone who already saved you |
On | Can find your Tag and display name. | Can pay you. |
Off | Sees "No one found" and cannot pay you by searching your Tag. | Can still pay you. |
You can claim a Tag before completing identity verification (KYC). However, other members can find you only after verification is complete.
How do I add a display name to my Tag?
A display name appears alongside your Tag when someone finds you. Adding one is optional.
Display names can contain up to 32 characters, including letters, numbers, spaces, full stops, apostrophes, and hyphens.
Where do Tag payments appear in my transaction history?
Tag payments appear in Transaction history - https://www.ether.fi/app/cash/transaction-history with the other person's display name and Tag.
Transactions are identified as:
Sent via Tag for outgoing payments.
Received via Tag for incoming payments.
How do I make sure I'm paying the right person?
Only send payments to people you know.
Verify the recipient's display name and Tag under Tag match and again on Confirm Send.
If you see "@name isn't in your recipients. Make sure it's them.", confirm the Tag with the recipient through another channel.
Save frequently used recipients so you don't need to re-enter their Tags.
ether.fi will never ask you to send money to a Tag to unlock, verify, or protect your account.
Does it cost anything to claim a Tag?
No. Claiming an ether.fi Tag is free.
Can I use a Tag on my business account?
No. Tags are available for personal accounts only.
