How does cashback work?

Cashback lets ether.fi members earn rewards when they spend, trade or borrow.

Every qualifying transaction with your Cash card, asset traded, or USD/EUR borrowed earns cashback in ETHFI. This will display in your assets list as ETHFI.

How does cashback work for card purchases?

Cashback moves through different stages after you make a card purchase:

  1. Pending: When your purchase is authorized but hasn't cleared, your cashback is calculated in dollar terms and remains pending.

  2. Earned: Once the purchase clears, your cashback is converted to ETHFI at the current price and enters a 7-day lock period.

  3. Claimable: After the 7-day lock period, your cashback becomes claimable.

  4. Claimed: Once you claim your cashback from the Cashback page, the ETHFI is sent to your account.

Trade and borrow cashback also follow the 7-day lock period.

For more information about the lock period and claiming your cashback, see Why is my cashback locked and when can I claim it?

Cashback rates are applied progressively based on your total spend each calendar month and you can review what card purchases are eligible for cashback here.

💡 Note: to curb abuse of the cashback program, a member must claim cashback in order to add it to their account asset balance. A minimum of $5 USD in cashback is required to claim. Cashback earned becomes available to claim 7 days after the card or trade transaction has cleared.

How is cashback calculated?

Cashback rates vary by membership level (Learn more about membership levels) and your total monthly spend. As spend increases, the rate steps down progressively instead of cutting off abruptly.

EUR transactions: These have an adjusted cashback rate to balance 0% FX rate benefit, while still rewarding everyday spending. Learn more about zero FX rate for EUR transactions works in our EUR Purchases – 0 FX Rate article.

USD and EUR share one monthly spend counter. There's a single monthly spend counter per user, no matter which currency you spend in. However, each transaction is rated against the ladder for its own currency, a USD purchase uses the USD thresholds, and a EUR purchase uses the EUR thresholds. EUR spend is converted to USD at our oracle rate at the time of the transaction to track progress against the shared counter.
