How Passkeys Work

Passkeys use your device’s built-in authentication like Face ID, fingerprint, or device PIN. When you sign in with a passkey:

  • Your device verifies your identity (Face ID, fingerprint, or PIN)

  • No password or email code is required

  • The passkey is stored securely on your device or password manager (like iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager)


Common Sign-In Issues with Passkeys

If you’re having trouble signing in with a passkey, here are the most common causes and how to fix them.

1. You’re on a Different Device

Passkeys are tied to the device or ecosystem where they were created.

What to do:

  • Try signing in from the same device where the passkey was set up

  • Or use cross-device sign-in (scan QR if prompted)


2. Passkey Not Available

Sometimes your device doesn’t show the passkey option.

What to check:

  • Make sure you’re logged into the correct Apple ID or Google account

  • Ensure iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager is enabled

  • Check that passkeys are supported on your browser and OS


3. Biometric Authentication Fails

Face ID or fingerprint may fail or not trigger.

What to do:

  • Retry authentication

  • Make sure Face ID / fingerprint is properly set up on your device

  • Restart your device if needed


4. Browser or App Issues

Older browsers or in-app browsers may not support passkeys correctly.

What to do:

  • Use a supported browser (Safari, Chrome, Edge)

  • Avoid signing in from embedded browsers (e.g. inside email or social apps)

  • Update your browser and operating system


5. Passkey Was Deleted or Not Synced

If your passkey was removed or didn’t sync, you won’t be able to use it.

What to do:

  • Sign in using email + OTP instead

  • Recreate your passkey after logging in


6. Multiple Accounts or Conflicts

If you have multiple accounts, the wrong passkey may be selected.

What to do:

  • Choose the correct account when prompted

  • Remove old or unused passkeys from your device settings

  • Try a different device or browser

  • Contact support with:

    • Your device type

    • Browser used

    • Screenshot or error message
